We advertised for a tutor but were underwhelmed with the options. Few of them were credibly socially distancing and anyone with an actual teaching qualification or experience was charging really high rates. We can afford it but it didn't seem like a good deal. I guess it is a seller's market right now. So it just did not pencil out for us. My Dads are well above grade level and doing ok with DL, and my work is flexible enough, so we are getting by and I don't think this will be more than a blip. We are choosing to spend our viral exposure budget on a playdate Pod instead.

I don't need a tutor because I am teaching my Kindergartener myself (as she gets nothing out of DL) and she is on track academically but that begs the question - why do we then need the K teacher and why should I support her getting her salary and keeping her job during this year when I am doing the entirety of her job and will continue to do so while DL continues? I would perhaps feel differently if my child was unique in getting nothing out of DL but I've talked with a number of parents in DD's grade and they all feel the same - the teacher may be trying hard but the results are nonexistent due to the fact that most 5 year olds are not developmentally suited to distance learning.

I am not saying DL is horrible across the board - I have two other children, one in upper elementary and one in middle school. DL works for them well enough so I have no problem with it.

But why would I support DL when it provides zero value even if it's not hurting my child in particular due to my efforts to remedy the situation? Either you can do your job and get paid or you can't and you don't. And guess what? If you are a teacher for small children, SPED kids etc, more often than not, you cannot do it remotely.

How will a teacher DL and tutor a child?

Why don't you just hire a tutor? Then you can support the teachers who want to stay virtual.

Yeah I know it doesn't solve the problems of equity. But, honestly, nothing short of 100% in person will solve that problem and that's not happening until well after a vaccine.

So if you want to support teachers but also make sure your kid is learning something, hire a tutor.

Again, I'm talking ONLY to the people who can afford it. To the people who post about how they are two lawyer families, live in a big house in NW, etc. who say school needs to resume in person because they can't work and meet their kids' needs at the same time. So hire someone who can?

I'm just puzzled that this solution isn't mentioned more on here.
