I understand your concern OP. I don’t think it’s a problem unless he’s been made aware of his perspective and still repeatedly done this. Lots of men in this generation have blind spots in this area. So point it out to him. If he responds receptively, the problem is on the way to being solved.

I'd point out to him what he said and how he comes across and tell him you're just letting him know so that his peers don't think he's a piece of shit.. That YOU know that OBVIOUSLY he'll hire the person most QUALIFIED for the job based on their CREDENTIALS and you'd hate for anyone to think he really wants to just hire the one who smiled brightest.

OK, assuming she had the educational qualifications, I would pick the smiling happy "I want to work with her" candidate every time over equally qualified but un-likable candidates.

It is stupid to pretend that congeniality is not important in the workplace.

This is one of the reasons you have an in-person interview, and don't just hire based on "best resume".

Today he was part of a group interviewing candidates for two positions in his division. I heard him talking about one of the female candidates with his colleagues. I couldn’t believe he wanted the group to select this female candidate “...considering how she smiles and how happy she looked during the interview. This is the kind of people you want to work with all day...”
It’s definitely not retail, not marketing, not fashion, not health, not a restaurant. The job requires a high education level, PhD for many positions.
At this point, I think this is a yellow flag in our marriage. What’s your impression?
