This. I would just do it and remove it from your list of things to worry about. Lines are likely to be longer when everybody who put it off goes for an inspection next year. And then you wouldn't have to worry about whether an out-of-state cop would observe DC's extension if you're traveling and get stuck having to show an expired registration.
