I’ve been looking for learners permit and see zero availability. I must be searching in the wrong place.

Yes, choose "transactions" then you'll be prompted to select a location to "visit a customer service center" on the next page. The page after that has an option for "driver's license and identification card services" (you have to scroll down to see it).

It's worth checking availability at a number of places. I did that and lucked into a much earlier appointment at the third or fourth site I tried.

If you can get an appointment, I think any of them will be “easy” right now. I went to Fair Oaks a few weeks ago and it was a piece of cake. The appointments truly make a huge difference. It’s too bad they’re so limited.

My DL expired in July and needed an upgrade to Real ID, so had to go in person. Alexandria DMV is right down the street from me, and it was excellent. Only 5-10 people in the entire place, zero waiting, employees all very pleasant. Was in and out in less than 15 mins. It was fabulous.

Keep an eye on the site as new appointments in odd places get released from time to time. We ended up getting appointments in Warrenton (about 45 mins from our place) and they were completely excellent, both in terms of COVID-19 safety behavior and being pleasant to work with. Very unDMV-like. In and out in minutes.

Oh wow! I should have checked appointment slots first. I didn't realize it was booking out like that & walk ins weren't allowed at all! Makes sense though. Thanks so much for this info and I'm glad to hear that appointments do help with reducing wait time at least!

If/when things go back to normal, you can look up the wait times and choose based on that.

This! Or you may have to look around the DMV appointment site for available slots if you can't wait several months. There are no "walk ins" right now.
On a side note, I actually love it. So much better then wasting several hours in line.

I recently moved from DC to VA and need to change my car registration. I just did the safety & emissions inspections but believe I need to go in person to update my registration. I'm located in Alexandria and so would normally go to that location, but I wanted to check and see if there are certain locations that are known to typically be less crowded or to more efficiently get people in and out. These days I especially appreciate not having to linger in public places and would drive further to avoid a long wait. If anyone knows if certain hours/days of the week tend to be better to go, I would greatly appreciate that type of information as well! The DMV locations below are all not too far from me. Thank you so much for any help you can give!
