It probably depends on the diagnosis. We had a kid diagnosed ASD right at 3 (like a month before 3rd birthday) and he did encourage genetic testing for us but I didn’t pursue it. For something like expressive speech delays alone, probably not.

It’s very helpful to have the medical diagnosis of autism, but keep in mind, it won’t make a difference for the schools/your IEP. They will always want to do their own testing. Also as your child gets older, you might want to pursue private educational testing and/or a private full neuropsych assessment. But the medical diagnosis is a great starting point for ABA, speech, OT, PT, getting a communication device etc.

We have been with Pediatric Associates of Alexandria for over a decade and are very happy with them. We saw Dr Shropshire when my kid was 7 after years of emotional issues at home. He did a physical exam and spoke at length with me about our issues. We left with an ADHD diagnosis and his recommendation to find someone to do Cognitive Behavior Therapy. We have been seeing a therapist for this and it was extremely helpful to my kid. When it became clear my kid would benefit from a 504 in school, I contacted Dr.Shropshire and he responded immediately with the ADHD diagnoses paperwork (I had lost it) and checked in with us. It was a very good experience for us, but may just be a starting point for others depending on what is needed.

We are Ped Associates of Alexandria patients as well. Highly recommend this group children of all ages. Cannot do better.

We saw him twice early in our journey. On our first visit, when our son was 2.5, he said our son did not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism, and diagnosed low tone and receptive and expressive speech delays. We did not really understand what that meant at the time. A few months later, our son was evaluated by early intervention, and was qualified under the autism criteria. We went back to Dr. Shropshire, feeling confused. He then gave us an autism diagnosis, explaining that this would expand our access to services through our insurance. But we didn't get much guidance about what to do next. He didn't suggest a specific set of therapies, just explained the many options. We didn't feel like it was very helpful, and got ourselves on the waitlist at Kennedy Krieger at that point. That appointment at KKI ended up being much more helpful in terms of deeper assessments and insights to help make a longer-term therapy plan.

I'm glad we saw him, because the wait was short, and it felt like we were doing something when we didn't know what to do, but we haven't been back.

Bumping this - wondering if anyone else has any experience with him? We are taking DC to see him in a few weeks and I am not sure what to expect. Our pediatrician referred us to him in response to my concerns about his speech delay (we are Ped Associates of Alexandria patients).

We saw him when my son was 3 and we suspected ADHD and Autism. We went to DR Shropshire b/c we were able to get in with him right away. He screened our son for autism but just diagnosed him with ADHD. Two years later we had a nueropysch done by Childrens and our son with diagnosed with ASD. Dr Shropshire seemed fine and if you are desperate to have your child looked at he has a very short waitlist but I would also plan to do a nueropysch with Childrens or KKI or Dr Black if you are concerned about Autism. They do a much more through eval and will screen for learning disabilities as well. In my opinion I never felt the development peds had much to offer besides refer us to other specialist but maybe we've just never found anyone we felt to be that great.

He is my DC's pediatrician. He screened for autism, but didn't diagnose it for my child.
