It probably depends on the diagnosis. We had a kid diagnosed ASD right at 3 (like a month before 3rd birthday) and he did encourage genetic testing for us but I didn’t pursue it. For something like expressive speech delays alone, probably not.
It’s very helpful to have the medical diagnosis of autism, but keep in mind, it won’t make a difference for the schools/your IEP. They will always want to do their own testing. Also as your child gets older, you might want to pursue private educational testing and/or a private full neuropsych assessment. But the medical diagnosis is a great starting point for ABA, speech, OT, PT, getting a communication device etc.
