+1. I got a quote for $500 for my car! I easily sold it for 6k the following month. It was older, but ran perfectly and had no issues. I think carmax doesn't want to sell older cars, so they give you a super low amount to make you not sell to them.

Facebook marketplace. The guy came with two of his friends who all helped him look over the car and engine, run the car's computer, etc. DH did the test drive with the guy and did take a picture of his license. The guy loved the car, so I met everyone at his bank with the title. I signed the title over to him and he brought out cash from the bank.

My car was only work $8500 so it was easy to get cash. I'd take a cashier's check from the bank too if I saw him get it. I think it's hard to take out more than 10k in cash from the bank. You also could get the money wired to your account.

Also, I just want to say I like facebook marketplace over craigslist. Facebook has real profiles (at least it's harder to fake) whereas craigslist has tons of scammers.

Craig's list. However, you need to understand that the KellyBlue Book is making car selling difficult. You think your car is worth that much, but you can't get that much from the dealer and a private person that has cash does not want to pay the inflated price you think your car is worth. Why would a private person buy from you? Bcs they want a cheaper price and you want the whole amount right away right? Otherwise, they might be happier paying $200 do the dealership, soyou accept the cashlower price.

We used Vroom and got a great deal to sell and none of the hassle and worry. Well maintained low mileage cars are in demand.

Why would that be a problem and need cash of $15-20K to buy the car? Why it has to be $9K cash?

Carvana is offering some crazy, stupidly high amounts right now. You might try them.

Screen the people VERY carefully. Keep their wallets and if cards. They only need a quick test drive. Price just a bit under. If you feel the least unsure don’t give your address or meet up. I’m a woman and have sold 4 cars. It’s a bit nerve wracking. But talk to the potential buyer.

CarMax will pay you do $16K for your $20K volvo because they want to keep part of the money for themselves too.

There are fake cashier's checks, so do the transaction at a bank. I don't think many people will try to joy ride your Volvo. Sell a Porsche, different story.

You can also have a used car dealer sell it on consignment, or just sell it to the dealer (like Carmax) and let it be their problem.

Maybe sell to CarMax? Easier and less stressful!

If you’ve sold a used car to another individual, how did you do it? I’m particularly concerned about the test drive. My car is in excellent shape with low mileage and worth about $20k. I’m reluctant to test drive with someone I don’t know, but I’m concerned about a joyride. That may be mitigated somewhat by the brand, which is Volvo. Also, how did you ensure payment? Did you transact at a bank?
