I'm sorry for your loss OP. I had my first pregnancy, which resulted in an MMC, earlier this year. I chose D&C because psychologically I did not want to go through the cramping and bleeding with the pills, or risk that it would be incomplete and have to do D&C anyway. I also wanted it over and done with as soon as possible.

P.S. I am 100% pro choice so I’m not trying to scare people. The pills are the safer option, but doctors aren’t very good at explaining this to patients. I think doctors also prefer the predictability and control of a D&C.

It also doesn’t need to be done badly to cause scarring. Some people’s bodies are just prone to scarring and adhesions, even if the procedure is performed correctly.

I also found the pills, which I took for a subsequent missed miscarriage (prob caused by the Asherman’s), easier both physically and emotionally than the D&C. For me, being at home in my own space it was very comforting, whereas the whole hospital thing was upsetting. If you go for the pills, I would advise asking for both a good painkiller and anti-nausea medicine. Those two things made the whole thing no more than somewhat uncomfortable. I don’t know what it would have felt like it I hadn’t had them. Shady Grove automatically prescribes both. I’m not sure all doctors do.

I'm so sorry OP. My second pregnancy was a missed miscarriage and I was encouraged to wait until I miscarried naturally. I went on to have a successful third pregnancy!

It’s called Asherman’s syndrome and it’s actually a lot more common than is reported. It’s the reason I have only one child. I wish I could go back and have the pills instead of the D&C.

My OB told me there is a slight risk. So not saying scarring will happen but there is some risk and I chose to avoid that risk. My OB also gave me the option of just waiting for my body to miscarry but I chose to schedule it using misoprostol.

It's a slight risk like when you take an antibiotic for strep you might get c-diff. It's something they have to note. But if they are presenting it as an option, the benefits outweigh the risks, which are minuscule.

It is a malicious anti-choice myth that D&Cs render women infertile.

I would go for a D&C, which I have had before (I have not taken misoprostol).

A D&C is predictable, instant in that you may have some bleeding/clotting for days after but compared to what the oral pill would cause it is far less quantity, and psychologically a D&C removes you from the pain a bit more (yes, you have to go in and be touched...but ask for a sedative) in that it is faster and spares you from seeing/waiting. There is still sadness and a bit of pain and bleeding either way, but a D&C is a lot less personal in my opinion.

I realize we all have our preferences, but I would choose D&C every time for more finality, more predictability, and less bleeding at home.

Why don’t you just wait and see what happens with your baby? You never know, right?

Because the pills don’t always work, which just drags out the process. A good friend had a miscarriage, used the pills, they didn’t work completely, she had to have a d&c anyway to get all the tissue out. Some people prefer the closure and certainty of a D&C. I’ve done both and there are pros and cons to both. One or two D&Cs should not affect future fertility if done correctly.

I'm curious why anyone would choose to do a D&C when misoprostol is an option? Especially if you want more kids.

My husband and I were heartbroken to learn recently that our 9 week old baby was not viable (chromosomal issue). While we are devastated, we are taking comfort in the fact that we have had one healthy pregnancy that resulted in a beautiful baby and we hope to begin trying again after we are cleared to do so. My doctor needs to look at my bloodwork before determining the best way to remove the tissue and egg sac in my body, but has suggested that she'll probably either go with mistorpostol or a D&C. Has anyone had experience with either that they would be willing to share? I'm freaked out after reading about both and could use some reassurance. Also, if anyone feels comfortable sharing their experience of trying after a loss I would appreciate hearing it right now. I feel confident that we will have more children, but am definitely a little scared that this could happen again.
