Did you have a first round interview? If so, I would check in. If not, I'd assume they have moved ahead with other candidates.

On the other hand, what's the harm in reaching out? I don't think any candidate needs to be in constant contact, but when I've been in hiring positions before I wanted to know who was really interested in the job.

At least you get an email back. I never get that consideration.

They don’t care, they’re still getting a paycheck.

COVID is bringing out the worst in recruiters/hiring managers. It’s not a good look for them. I pray they never find themselves in a position of being unemployed and looking for work!

I was just about to start a similar thread to ask if others are experiencing issues just like this. I'm in several processes but am getting no information or updates from recruiters. I understand that things are happening differently now, but the silence is so off-putting. Personally, I would much rather get an update that says "I don't really have anything to tell you but just wanted to check in..." or the like. Instead, I check in with the recruiter, fully expecting to do told "sorry, we're going a different way..." only to hear the same "still waiting to hear dates from the hiring manager so we can schedule your next interview..." Why are the recruiters so passive? It truly makes me wonder whether I want to work at a place that treats people so poorly.

OP, hang in there. I do think COVID is to blame for changing priorities, timelines, and processes. Hope you hear some good news soon -- everyone else who is waiting, too!

So the recruiter is reaching out and finding you, but with imperfect information. Please stay positive and know that your information is still out there with them!

I think this is very true. I have experienced more than one instance where they started out hiring for one position and then all of the sudden, plans changed. Or they decided to split the duties among current staff. It's definitely not always the recruiter who is the issue. Oftentimes, they are dealing with frustrating behavior too.

I’ve been job searching for 4 months, and the ghosting is real. At the recruiter / screener stage, I feel like they are just reading from a script and are required to tell you about next steps even if you may not be selected for those next steps. It still sucks, don’t get me wrong, but I try not to get emotionally invested at that part of the process. Ghosting happens even after 8 final round Zoom interviews over 3 days (exhausting!) when the recruiter tells you she’ll be in touch within a few days and then crickets. It’s just an awful process all around.

OP here, thank you for sharing your experiences and confirming my suspicion. I don’t really understand this practice of ghosting. Why not just be honest - as in, we are interviewing a few candidates and will get back to you shortly to let you know if you advance to the next stage? I don’t see what they get out of misleading candidates!

It's so hard to say OP. I went through three rounds of interviews and sent a writing sample they asked for and haven't heard anything in over a week. This was a place that was very much in contact with me over the entire process. Until now. They either lost interest, my writing sample sucked, someone got sick and was out, they can't find a time to meet.....who knows. This pandemic seems to have brought out the worst hiring practices I've ever experienced. Or maybe I've just not applied for enough jobs in my career and this is normal.

Ghosting is extremely common these days. I got all the way through to final interviews and was ghosted. After a couple months I wrote and asked if there was an update and they said they were going to cancel the vacancy. Then about a month after that, I got an automated email saying the job was cancelled.

Then I heard they were sacking several of the managers and team leaders. So, be thankful for every "no" you get. Usually there is a good reason.

This is 100% common, and happens all too often. In my opinion, even if they KNOW that they aren't going forward with you, they aren't going to let on. That and being a Monday, you might have gone first and had better candidates after you. I've been ghosted twice since Labor Day

I had an interview with a recruiter over week ago (last Monday). During the interview he explained the role, asked me a few general questions and then explained the next step - an interview with the hiring manager, then a series of interviews with several other members of the team, and finally possibly an interview with the hiring manager’s boss. He even told me what questions to prepare for in the next interview and said he would send me a blog with more information on the program I’d be managing and a link to indicate my availability for the next round of interviews. I told him I would be available later that week and late this week, but that I would unavailable early this week, due to a minor medical procedure (TMI?). At that point, he said that their hiring process generally takes 4-6 weeks, that they were still early in the process (he had only spoke to 2 or so candidates) and that it wouldn’t be a problem if we can’t schedule the next interview until late this week. I followed up with a thank you note, saying that I looked forward to the next steps - but I’ve heard nothing. I am assuming that this means they are not interested- but it is a bit strange because he was very clear/specific about next steps during the initial phone call. He didn’t say - this is what will happen, [u]if you advance to the next stage. Should I follow up again and if so, what should I say? Thanks for any insight or advice!
