We had the nursery near us and then moved the kids out at 2 (our kids are all 2 years apart). Maybe our kids are better sleepers than most, but they don't need us at night and I've never stayed with them when they fall asleep or coslept. We shut the door at 7:30 and they're happy as clams until the morning. I mean for most of the night we're in the family room downstairs and that's nbd.

Get a sound monitor if you want.

We live in rowhouse and set up the nursery in a bedroom on the same floor as the master. When my DS turned 3 and we needed the nursery for our second kid, we moved DS into his own room upstairs. Kept our second kid in the nursery until she was 3, then moved her upstairs in the room next to DS. So now both kids sleep on the floor above us. They are now 7 and 4 and we haven't had issues.

That's your problem. People on these boards will talk like having bedrooms on another floor is child endangerment or something. Lots of people live in THs or multi-level homes where the bedrooms are not all on the same floor. They are fine. I wouldn't want my kids on a floor below me, but above me would be fine.

We have always slept on the first floor while our kids sleep upstairs. They are 5 and 7 now. No issues whatsoever.

When my kids were very little (twins, we lived in that house from their age 1.5 to 3), their bedroom was on a different floor, but we just had a baby monitor. If one or both woke up and started crying we would hear.

Once or twice when one was sick and I was worried, I brought a mattress into their room and slept there.

In your situation, we ended up moving DC3 into our room (in his own bed) and kept baby in her own separate bedroom.

Our 3 yo would freak out being so far away from us (on another floor) that it was the only way.
