Oof. Bringing back bad memories of what a sore loser I used to be at board games as a kid. I can't imagine why my parents and siblings continued to play with me. But, in my defense, I was a child and I've grown out of it. (Still don't do well with trash talking, though. It's UNO, FIL & MIL, you don't have to gloat!)

You need to play much shorter games. Monopoly, risk? I don't have patience for either of those games, and I'm 43.

PP adding that I think a person this immature would probably be a nightmare even with cooperative games. Those generally involve the group agreeing on a strategy, and undoubtedly if the group didn't agree to play it EXACTLY the way MIL wanted to she would pout and sulk.

Giving her the benefit of the doubt, it's possible that the modern versions of the games are off-putting (Monopoly Deal if she's used to Monopoly). Otherwise, I agree that cooperative games might be the way to go. We really like Forbidden Island.

That's funny. My grandfather was the same. If he won he gloated and said "we're going to have to teach you how to play this game better" and if he lost he sulked and threw the pieces around.

I was 11 and I decided he was an asshole. And I was right.

Are you playing too? Just let them play. What’s the big deal. When your kids get tired of her behavior they’ll stop playing games with her —> good, natural-consequence lesson for all of them.

Start finding cooperative games to play.

Same OP! We are all a little competitive, but my MIL will start name calling. And she has no ability to see when everyone else is OVER IT and has stopped having fun. She is just mean about it, and I hate it.

So: I stopped playing with her! If the kids want to play, I make my DH play with them and I am "busy" doing something else. If the kids aren't having fun, they'll stop asking her. If they are, maybe they aren't noticing she's a sore loser.
