Yeah or go full ski jacket (eg, Columbia,etc), they’re often better ventilated if they’re made for activity. I wish I could wear my ski jacket everywhere in winter

The Primary down coats are a pretty good middle weight. I think they are well suited to the weather in this region -- perfect with a sweater on very cold days, but also fine unzipped on warmer winter days.

I loved the LL Bean Parka. We used for two seasons because the sleeves extend. And it's a fleece and winter coat in one so we used it six months of the year.

If being too hot is a problem, don’t buy an expensive brand like Patagonia. My Patagonia gear is so hot. Try something fleece instead of down, or PP’s suggestion, the super lightweight Uniqlo one.

Have you tried the Patagonia 3-in-1 or the Down Sweater Hoody? My son runs hot, but wears the DSH (or regular DS) in the winter. He also has a Patagonia RetroX for the in-between days. I would worry that the coat you posted will be even warmer than the Down Sweater because of the inside lining. You could call a Patagonia store (or the general customer service) and they can give you a run-down of the warmth level between the two coats. Also, Patagonia is great because once you’re finished with the coat, you can trade it back for store credit. Check out their Worn Wear site to see if they have any traded-in versions that may fit your child.

Lands End has grow along sleeves. My daughter runs hot and has always been comfortable in their jackets marked warm. They are also made well and easily last 2 seasons.

Our now 5 year old wore his Uniqlo coat for two winters. That's pretty much the only item of clothing he could wear more than one season because they grow like weeds at that age.

My son (PK age 4) seems to get hot in the down puffer coat I've put him in the past two winters. It is one of the more lightweight compressible coats. Will a jacket like this be warm enough?

Any other recommendations for a lightweight but still warm enough coat? I prefer something with a hood, and I generally prefer to buy big so I can get 2 seasons of wear.
