I’m confused on this as well. But the Gaines family and Hobby Lobby crowd seem to lean heavily right and these barnstars are part of that aesthetic now it seems.

In a city, I would assume it's an anchor plate for a tie rod bracing masonry walls...

We own a farm with a barn, and I would never put that crap (or the quilt signs that seem to be everywhere out here) on our barn. They are supposed to bring good luck, but they just look like HGTV/Hobby Lobby junk to me.

I think they are traditionally German - you see them everywhere in farming communities in Pennsylvania. They may originally have been used as a "hex" to ward off bad luck or evil spirits. I don't know that any meaning continues to be attached to them.
