I’ve also known a fair few guys who, when they’re speaking frankly and maybe have been drinking, are glad their stick figure wives gained a bit. One friend’s wife got down to a very low weight for their wedding and he was relieved she gained weight back.

They’re looking for women, not trophies. They want women that can have a good time vs. Looking a certain way that models good puritanical-type behaviour.
And it may be less about preference than a societal expectation that their partner emulate a certain look or set of values.
