It’s been around for a while and I would never do this in my own kitchen.

How are you just now noticing this.

It is a fad that's on its way out.

We just renovated and did white cabinets on the surround and island is a stained dark grey. Countertops are dark granite on both.

Floors are chocolate colored wide plank hardwood.

We’re doing kitchen soon and doing two tone but island only - dark island and white perimeter. I would not mix colors on uppers and lowers personally.

The bottom pictures is nice, because the cabinets are one Color and the shelves are a different color. The top pics looks like a kitchen showroom with the differences cabinet styles and color.

I hate open shelves because everything gets dirty. I don't like it when upper and lowers are different although I do really like the first picture posted above with the white glass front cabinets above and teal cabinets below, and the teal cabinet above the ovens. That looks really good. the second picture is unbalanced, agree so much. Although those dishes are going to get dirty and have to be washed before use!

What I do like is when then island cabinets are a different color and/or the counter on the island is different from the perimeter counters. My friend is doing that in her kitchen remodel now and it looks fantastic. I think that looks very natural and good to me because it is reminiscent of the original "islands" which were kitchen work tables.

It looks like a mistake.

I tend to prefer it if the upper cabinets are either open shelving or feature glass doors and lots of display shelving. Like this:

I like it least when it's dark lower cabinets and light/white uppers, especially if you also do a light/white counter and backsplash. I think this tends to look unbalanced.

We just did this in our reno last year. Island is mahogany and perimeter is white. We love it

My parents did this when they built their house almost 16 years ago. Still looks fabulous.
