24/50 states require some form of assessment. 8/24 require standardized tests, 10/24 allow parents to choose between standardized tests and portfolio review, 3/24 require tests some years and allow parents to choose the other years, MD requires portfolio review and 2/24 leave it up to district (I’m in MA, and it’s up to district here; we were given 5 choices, and we chose portfolio review for k, portfolio and test for 4th).
