I hyphenated my name when I got married and regret it. Wish I'd either outright taken my husband's name or just kept mine. My maiden name's last 2 letters are the same as the first two letters of my husband's name so when airlines and others squish the two names together, it looks like a bunch of the same letters repeating like someone made a typo. The agents' faces when they try to read it are priceless.

Very silly, how many hyphens are enough when the grand children come

I had one and it caused a lot of issues with my standardized tests. I couldn’t do a hyphen and my name was too long so it never matched my school records correctly. Granted this was 20+ years ago and things I’m sure have improved, but I HATED it.

And, a silly thing, but my name never fit on one line in programs (the school play, graduation, NHS induction, etc) and don’t get me started on my wedding invitation! I was so glad I married someone with a 4-letter last name!

My dads last name was already hyphenated (French name) so I grew up with a hyphenated names and i didn’t have an issue with it, except when we had to bubble in names for SAT exams back in the day. We created a new hyphenated name for my daughter that combines my husbands name and part of my former hyphenated name.

Never been an issue. Husband and I both changed our last names to hyphenate; our kid’s last name(s) matches ours.

They both have short first names though. My first name has 8 letters; it plus the 2 long last names means it does not fit on any form, credit card, etc. So, maybe consider length.

That's a good idea.

I also know a family with one kid with the mother's last name and another with the father's, which could be a good option.

We know a family like this too. Dad has the longest most complicated polish last name...

Ha, I also know a family like this where the son has the father's name and the daughter the mother's. The maternal name is the equivalent of something like "Evans" and the Polish name is the (not uncommon in Poland but very confusing to English speakers) equivalent of "Wojciechowski."

No it has never been an issue. Occasionally they are called one or the other last name but most of the time people get it correct.

I had one. Lots of my contemporaries in NYC did. I didn't care until my 20s, when I legally shortened my name.

Thank you.

Has your kid experienced any issues with one?
