IME, this doesn’t save as much as your think it will. Maybe 1-2k on a 40k car and usually color/option selection is limited to what they have left.
Last year, we saved $7K on a new 2019 Subaru with an MSRP of $37K. The new 2020 model with the same features was $38K and they had a waiting list (so no discounts).
You’re right - you are stuck with whatever colors they have left. In our case, it was white exterior with black leather. I’m cool with that.
