I have a 2009 Honda Civic and it only has 92,000 miles on the odometer.
I haven’t been driving mine much for the past six months, but I feel there is a lot of life left in it still.

I wouldn’t purchase a brand-new car unless something was really wrong w/mine or wanted to give it to one of my children.

I love not having a monthly car payment!

For example, the change over for new model year for Subarus happens late Aug - early Oct depending on the model. You buy the 2021 model next year when the 2022 models arrive on the lot. You’ll get a deep discount off MSRP for a new car.

IME, this doesn’t save as much as your think it will. Maybe 1-2k on a 40k car and usually color/option selection is limited to what they have left.

Last year, we saved $7K on a new 2019 Subaru with an MSRP of $37K. The new 2020 model with the same features was $38K and they had a waiting list (so no discounts).

You’re right - you are stuck with whatever colors they have left. In our case, it was white exterior with black leather. I’m cool with that.

Smart move. Who cares about the color of their car? What are you, 20?

Is this sarcasm? Why would someone spend all that money on a car in a color they don’t like?

Agreed. I’m the January new-car-buyer. The dealer had loads of those god awful neon blue RAV4s left over, and tried to push one on me. No way was I going to drive around in a car that color. Fortunately, they still had one left in the color of my choice.

I've been looking at prices - very high right now for a lot of cars, the only deals out there are for unwanted models.

I bought a new car in January. Joke on me! They keep calling me for the 5000-mile checkup and I have to tell them I’ve only driven it about 600 miles.

Better to wait, OP.

Depends on the car. Many models are in short supply because of the factory shutdowns earlier in the pandemic and because of swift sales since then. You have a lot people buying just because of the low interest rates. Others are buying because they no longer want to use mass transit because of the virus.

So like others say, for many models, if you try to get end of the year savings, you will be stuck with a trim level and/or color that's not your first choice.

So we bought a new car at the end of last year. Obviously we didn't know it'd spend most of the first year sitting in our driveway. But the upside is that we could use all that saved parking/gas money we didn't spend to pay that lovely first year property tax bill (in VA).

But I'd probably wait it out unless there is another reason you need a new car. You may even be able to wait until the end of 2021 at this rate.

Does your old car still work? Does it need expensive repairs? If you're just buying a new car for something to do, I would try to wait. I don't think the price is going to be that much different if you wait.

I have a 2009 car and am ready to buy a new car. However, currently this car just sits in the driveway and is not driven because I work from home because of COVID. I want to take advantage of end of the year sales, but this car will likely sit until I start commuting back into work.

Should I just wait to buy until I start commuting back to work, possibly next spring? Or take advantage of end of the year sales and let the new car sit for a few months?
