My mom had this battle with me around 9-10. For a few months I kept asking about shaving, she said "No" and thinking she had a while she said I could start shaving when I start having periods, just after turning 10 I had my first period so she had to let m win that one.

Get her an electric razor and let her. She'll probably do it a few times and then wait.

If she feels she is ready to shave then let her, take her shopping and let her choose a razor and some shaving cream and use this as mother/daughter bonding time to teach her plus a great time to chat about body changes as she starts puberty.

My daughter decided it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission. She did it at age 10. Three years later she’s not a regular shaver even though she has dark hair. The stubble isn’t bad at this point. Frankly I would have given permission. It’s one of those things that isn’t life altering and I just don’t care about it.

It's her body. I think it would set a strange precedent if you wouldn't respect her wishes. I'd just want to make sure she doesn't cut herself.

Moom sugar waxing. My DD started age 11. I did it for her initially and now she does it herself and she doesn't need to do it more than about 1 x per month which is a lot less than shaving.

If she wants to do it, let her. Especially right now -- she's in virtual school, and pants season is approaching -- if she doesn't like it, she can stop. As a hairy person, don't be that mom who makes her kid "be okay with her body as it is" and makes her hate her body even more. She doesn't like the hair. Let her get rid of it.

OP I was 10 when I started shaving, for similar reasons. I hated the upkeep so my mom bought me an electric razor for women and that was what I did until my teen years.

UM, new poster here. Shaving doesn't make the hair darker or coarser. PUBERTY does. It does make it feel sharp as it now has a blunt edge. But no, it doesn't make it darker or coarser any sooner than it would have naturally.

That’s fine, I’ll agree with that. But as far as it not being a commitment? Let me know how you feel with three day stubble, tired after a long day, and knowing you’ll be in shorts the next day. If that’s not commitment, I don’t know what is.

I think what PP is saying is that you can let her shave once, and if it's just a passing whim, she never has to do it again. She can dip a (hairy) toe in the water, so to speak.

If you use a depilatory or something that removes instead of cutting the hairs, it's less of a real commitment because there's no scratchy stubble. She may be able to do it once, and not have to do it again for another few months.

We used Nair Sensitive on my DD's light blonde leg hair before she went off to camp a few years ago when she was 11, and she didn't need to do it again until the end of the summer. I know some will pearl-clutch about chemicals, but it's not like she's doing it every day. You also don't have to leave it on very long for fine, light hair. When it gets to the point she's doing it regularly, I'll have her switch to a razor.

I started shaving at 10. My mom didn’t want me too, but I was embarrassed and my grandma bought me a razor. Putting it off till the spring sounds fine, but if she really wants to start now, it doesn’t seem like a big deal. Once she gets the hang of it, it will only add a couple minutes to her shower.

DD9 has voiced interest in shaving her legs. I’d be the first to admit she has lots of light blonde hairs. I’m sure it’s starting to become embarrassing. She’s good about hygiene in general, but shaving is a big commitment.

How young is too young, and how do you know if they are ready? I told her she will be in pants all winter but that I will consider it in the spring. She will be 10 then. What says DCUM?
