Yes. My kids get this all the time. My younger insists that he has to wear his boots tight because he has a better touch that way. As a result he frequently has black toenails which grow out and fall off once a year or so before he repeats the exercise. No treatment really necessary. If it's too painful to play give your DC a day or two off - and you might need to tape the nail to the toe to prevent it ripping off painfully if it starts to separate before it falls off.
