My first car was a bright yellow 1972 VW Beetle. I loved that car. And I got stranded on the highway the night of my college graduation when it broke down. I finally got rid of it about six months after I started working. It wasn't reliable and I wasn't skilled enough to keep up the constant maintenance it required. My dream is to buy an old Beetle as my fun, weekend car.

My first car was a 1963 Dodge Dart GT Convertible. Bought it senior year HS with 159,000 on odometer. Ran like a top. Owner gave me all receipts. Most amazing part of all guy changed his own oil and had a tire mount thing. He never once took it to a mechanic not even for oil change. Most expensive repair was $20 bucks in 17 years of receipts.

They were pretty rare even in 1980 and today last I heard 8 are in existence in the world. The body style was short lived.

Maybe the more interesting question is whether people have cars from their past that they loved so much they think about getting it again (either that exact car or the newer model). My third car was a BMW 3 series and I do pine after that quite a bit. It was an amazing car to drive and I loved it for 100,000 miles. But that was a hand-me-down and I can't afford a BMW now.

I got over my first car the moment it broke down on a highway off ramp in a largely deserted area around midnight when I was in college. Got over it real quick.
