You must be very relieved, congratulations!

We dropped mineoff a week ago. I cried randomly throughout senior year, made it through drop off at a SLAC that may actually make it until Thanksgiving without tears. Then cried randomly this week.

But, we had our first weekly Zoom chat tonight and I suddenly feel great. “I hope we make it until Thanksgiving, because I’m really happy here”. “a friend and I walked into town and found a great used bookstore” (he arrived knowing no one). “The professor for my religion class is really into it, and has already sent out about 5 emails” (classes starts tomorrow). He took his computer and gave us a tour of how he had his room set up (they are all singles this year).

He seemed so happy and settled after only a week. The end of his senior year was so crappy. It’s just so nice to see him happy and settling in. In the middle of COVID, that’s no small thing.

He may be back home next week.

I cried several times throughout my son's senior year. I also bawled after dropping him off. I agree, it's hard.

Honestly, my oldest is 6 y.o., and I cry every single time she watches Zootopia and the bunny leaves the farm to take the train to Zootopia. Every time, imagining the day my DD will leave home (probably for college).

I'm sure you'll seem calm compared to whatever I'll be like

I totally understand.

When I got home from dropping off my (only) child...the house was as silent as a tomb.

Warning: the next day was worse.

But, like you, I was proud of her. And felt sure that she was where she should be. Her excitement and potential for the next phase of life were so evident.

COVID must make it worse, because normally at a time of risk, you would want your child near your side.

Good luck to you both. Over time, the empty nest does get easier. (And when they come home, it is very exciting: like a celebrity is about to arrive!!

Hugs OP! It’s difficult in any year. Can’t imagine how much tougher this one.

Dropped my kid off at his campus today for his first year of college. Through everything, carefully considered, he still wanted to go and live on campus. Despite everything going on, I'm excited for him. Genuinely.

I played it cool. And then the water works started the second I shut the car door to leave.
