Favorite book ever.

I was also underwhelmed. I think it's the kind of book that either pulls you in as a lifetime favorite or simply isn't a good fit for you as a reader.

I loved it when I read it as a teen, and I love it again each time I read it as an adult. But I was hooked early on in the book because like a pp I loved reading Francie’s vivid descriptions of her childhood.

I loved it and remember it vividly.

I read it when I was 11. We were visiting friends, I found it on their bookshelf, was deep into it when we were leaving and they let me take it with me. Shortly after that my mom's friend across the street told her the book was NOT for a kid my age, and my mom confiscated it. I grieved for a long time, then found it on a high shelf when I was dusting shelves in the living room. I grabbed it, hid it under the mattress, and read late into the night until I finished it.

I just liked the vast amount of detail about the Francine's life and the lives of those around her. For me the book was so vivid. I was a re-reader growing up and reread portions of it many times during my teen years, and once as an adult.

Oh gosh. This is honestly my favorite book and I have read it maybe 20 times. It gives me comfort like a warm blanket. I’m sorry you aren’t enjoying it OP. It is such a wonderful book. I will say it changes a lot halfway through when she becomes older and gets a job. Maybe that part of the book will appeal more to you. I loved the everyday scenes of her childhood in Brooklyn the best myself.

It honestly isn't great, though I did reread it a few years ago and enjoyed it. It's important in its perspective on poverty and gender, but has really sappy moments.

I somehow never read it before and keep seeing it on best of all time lists. I’m 1/3 of the way through and am underwhelmed. The changing perspectives and jumbled chronology are doing me in. For those who read it, did it capture your interest from page one? Thanks for your thoughts.
