Subject: Tell me about junking a car in DC
We donated one and got a $5000 write off. We were shocked they got that much out of it!

Call a junkyard and drive it in. I did this years ago and got $50

OP here with an update. Thanks for your advice.
I ended up donating to melwood. No problem picking it up off the street. They helped me remove the plates, I handed them the keys and signed the paperwork and that was it. Very easy.
When I got the final paperwork, they weren't actually able to sell it for more than 500 dollars, which made me glad I had not gone the Carvana or carmax route.

Put it on Craigslist for $500. Take the fastest offer over $0.

Call the donation place, make an appointment, hand over the title, sign some forms, get a tax writeoff form, and that is that.

+1 almost every charity does it. You will also get a tax deduction.

Yes I donated my junker. I only got a very minimal tax write off bc it was in terrible shape and old but they just came and picked it up.

It is time to junk / scrap my beloved old car.
Any advice from people who have been there and done that? Recommendations for a good junking service welcome. Or is it better just to donate it?
The car looks fine but is undriveable (check engine light on), so it would have to be towed.
