Where does it say that all middle schools lessons will be non-interactive? Are teachers recording them ahead of time? I am so annoyed at the complete blow over of middle school. I mean, my college and private school high schooler had wonderful involved interactive classes last year. My public middle schooler had nothing. No zooms at all. It was self learning and it was terrible. She lost so much. Grades didn't matter. So didn't care about school at all. I was truly hoping it would be better this year. One more year and then on to private high school. I would have transferred her earlier if I knew about COVID before applications were due. This sucks!

I think parents need to be realistic about live teaching. It will be mainly reading powerpoints and students using chat. Everything else is pulling teeth.

Are you kidding me? If they are recorded, no one will show up to class. And yes, there is time to meet with teachers virtually on Wed and EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.

OP, I am completely against it. My kids will not actively participate in them and I will make sure their video is turned off. This is a privacy issue. It is also a recipe for disaster for bullies and others who want to turn in possible embarrassing moments from the teacher or a student responding into a memes.

If you kid misses a class, they miss the whole class. Just like a regular school day. Who do we talk to about recordings?

EXACTLY!!!!

The teachers and parents I know who are worried about this, are worried that a gaffe could go viral and/or end up on the late show. No one really wants their workday video'd all day for the world to see - that's a lot of pressure to be perfect all day, and none of us are.

They have to be recorded otherwise kids were ok miss and not catch up. It’s not like kids can stop by the classroom before or after school to discuss things.

Is it possible to just record what is happening on the main screen (audio plus whiteboard/PowerPoint/etc)?

I am an MCPS teacher, and I am wondering how parents feel about all of our classes being recorded. As a parent, I am reluctant to have my own children recorded, but I realize that if I have them turn off their cameras during class they will be only minimally engaged in the lesson. As a teacher, I respect the fact that many parents won't want their children recorded, and I am really wondering about how ethical it is to record kids, especially those who have accommodations for special needs. But I am also fearing another semester where I won't be able to fully engage all students because I won't see their faces. It seems that we are between a rock and a hard place.

Thoughts on recording all class sessions? I am wondering how the Board of Education will address this at their Tuesday meeting, but I suspect they will just vote in the proposed plan after a few members ask questions about it. I guess if I were making a suggestion to MCPS, I would suggest using the "flipped classroom" model, where teachers pre-record their lessons and use class time for problem solving and answering questions. I actually prefer this model as both a parent and a teacher. However, this wouldn't meet the needs of all of the parents who seem to be demanding lots of "live teaching." I also don't think it would necessarily meet the needs of children in elementary schools. I teach high school, and it is more suited to this level.
