Mansions are huge and they have many non-bedroom areas like Gym, Swimming Pools, Wine Celler, Movie theater etc. It makes sense to have 1/2 bathrooms around all these areas so that you don't have to trudge to the bathroom in your bedroom.

Mansions usually have old rich people living in them. Bladder control is an issue.

Mansions also have large staff and it is convenient to have 1/2 bathrooms near the laundry room, butler's pantry, garage etc.

My house growing up had 8 bedrooms. Each had their own bathroom(either attached or right outside). We had 2 half baths on the first floor and one full bath. In the basement, we had a full and a half. We had a half 3rd floor (other half was a terrace type space) and had a half bath up there.

Looking back it was so ridiculous. On the regular only like 5 bathrooms were used.

Because most rich people are full of crap!

Same. First floor powder room would be such an upgrade. I don’t have the money and it wouldn’t fit anyway.

My parents have a 7 bedroom house with “only” 5 full baths & 1 half bath.

We have a full bath for every bedroom and two powder rooms. You need to have powder rooms every so often so people don’t have to wander the house looking for a bathroom.

Powder rooms for guests in all wings on the main floor.

Bathrooms near the entrance to the pool/patio.

I know two families with 4 bedroom homes with 7 bathrooms.

I've never seen a house with a 2-1 full bathroom to bedroom ratio, but it has to do with how far away from a bathroom you are. Assume you have a 10,000 square foot house and all of the bedrooms are on the second floor, are you really going to have only one powder room for 5,000 square feet of house?

We have a big house although not that big), and we're adding another bathroom on the first floor. There's one in the basement, as well, so we'll have 4 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths. One of the baths is one large Jack & Jill type situation between two guest rooms that could have been split into two separate baths, so that could easily be 6 1/2 for 4 bedrooms.

Large houses are also more likely to have a bathroom by the pool, workout room/gym, etc.
