We got a Yakima Fulltilt to hold 4 bikes (two adults size, 1 24" and 1 20") and all fit with a little jockeying. The Fulltilt has sliding mounts which I think makes it easier to get the bikes to fit. Though, honestly, removing handlebars and pedals would make it much easier to get the bikes on.

Any rack that supports the bike from the bottom is going to be better than a “hanging” rack. You get what you pay for.

I got the saris super clamp ex for 4 bikes and it works great. Very easy to load / unload bikes, bikes are stable for long distances / highway travel, and it is light enough.

I also considered a few other ones, like Thule and Hollywood. Hollywood seemed solid with good reviews and good options, but is 30 lbs heavier and I wanted something that I could manage on my own when needed.

So ultimately went with Saris taking into account shipping availability and weight.

You may be talking about the KUAT NV racks? They are a great company and I had one of their older 3 bike hitch racks. It was extremely solid. When we needed to haul a fourth bike, we took the front wheels off and put the bike inside the vehicle, but it looks like the newer NV racks can be expanded to hold 4 "full size" bikes just fine.



Many reviewers on the Thule and Yakima racks say that they bought what they thought could hold 4 or 5 bike racks, but the racks were not able to accommodate that many bikes. Others said that additional parts were needed on those same racks to accommodate the stated number of bikes. I can buy additional parts if needed, but I don't know what parts to buy. Also, it seems that carrying 4 bikes is a common phenomenon... so many families of 4 go biking together. How do they carry their bikes? Is it complicated?


I know Thule and Yakima are big names in the bike rack business, but I've never had one of those in all these years. I used the KUAT rack and the 4 bike model is not cheap:

Saris Freedom 4-Bike. It's a little wonky to get into the hitch, but the bikes load easily.
