OK, but it is entirely within the library's property I would think. The gardens outside and the benches must fall within the library's property.

If not a librarian saying 'please don't smoke pot on library grounds' then who?

Is there another agency aside from the police department with enforcement authority?

I had to crack up when our Mayor suggested we should be calling the ANC to get them to break up large gatherings.

Should I start calling Monika Nemeth every time I see pot being smoked at the library?

You dont have to police the activities but the librarian who said smoking pot outside on public property is legal is actually incorrect. And since patrons now must queue outside in the haze its obnoxious. The Mayor and Council need to decide if DC police should be supported in enforcing laws, or they should change those laws.

I agree with the previous posters. As a city we got bamboozled by decriminalization. We gave them an inch and they took a yard. Sad that people are so selfish, but that is no longer a surprise these days.

White collar types do what they can get away with. Why wouldn't potheads? This is on the police for not enforcing the law. They don't even have to write tickets. Just show up and say "Put that out. Move along. Don't do that again here."

Criminalizing again is not the answer. Jailing people for this minor of an offense is not the answer.

Yes, I'll be voting against the shroom initiative solely based on DC's completely dropping the ball on pot. I just don't trust the city to hold any sort of standard after its history with pot decriminalization.

DC stinks--literally. We left the city last year and it's so nice to walk around without the skunky smells.

I voted for de-criminalization , but not for this. Very disappointed with how this turned out and I would support any petition to recriminalize. OR, DC could enforce not smoking in public spaces?

Pot is legal for possession, but public pot smoking is against the law. MPD however won't respond to pot smoking complaints unless there are other circumstances (e.g. connected with a noise nuisance).

That being said, it's gross and annoying but I don't think it's going to cause your kids irreparable harm. I think you've got bigger things to worry about than 5 seconds walking past some pot. And I say that as someone who DETESTS the smell of weed.

Im super liberal and owned a home in DC and sold and moved out of DC last year to the dreaded suburbs (its been awesome, zero regret). I was so so so sick of my babies and kids having to walk through clouds of pot smoke every single place we went, adjacent to the daycare, outside the restaurants, at the local kids parks, and of neighbors who did not care if kids were playing outside hey would come toke up 6 feet away engulfing all the kids on the block in smoke. I know its legal. But its not about that, its about respecting a shared space especially with little kids. Move to the f'ign alley.

Anyway, it won't improve at all so if you dont like it probably best to move.

Ha! I was just there an hour ago. There was clouds of pot smoke around the library. I thought it was people waiting for the 3pm opening.

Pot is legal.

I completed my weekly library run to Cleveland Park and once again was a little surprised at the number pf people smoking pot on the benches outside of the doors. I realize that we fancy ourselves uber progressive, however, at what point does our pride kick in and we realize that six people smoking pot in front of kids waiting to use the library may not be the 'look' we are going for.

I actually asked my librarian about it and she replied that anything outside of the door was not library property but public property and therefor legal. While that may have surprised me, I would still think that we could keep our pot smoking limited to areas it does not impact families waiting to check out Amelia Bedelia.
