A 12 ounce Diet Coke has 42 mg of caffeine. Regular Coke has 32 mg of caffeine. A cup of coffee has 95 mg of caffeine. Your aunt's habit was equal to drinking three cups of coffee per day. It's a moderate amount of caffeine. The FDA says that adults can safely drink up to 400 mg of caffeine per day.
Regular Coke can contribute to kidney stones. Any drink with a lot of fructose contributes to kidney stones. Diet Coke does not contribute to kidney stones, because it doesn't contain fructose. Diet Coke may be hard on kidney health for other reasons, though.
