Not all schools have a/c. I cannot imagine starting school in early August here in MD with no a/c. My school doesn’t have it and the beginning of the year and end of the year can be brutal.
I grew up in the rural South. 30 years ago, MS had AC. My HS did not. Started 2nd week of August. It was brutal. But even at 100+ degrees outside, we never had a heat cancellation. I fainted in class once. They had me go (unescorted) to see the clinic aid, then sent me back to class. Even today, the Rural South is just a different place.
The upside of 2nd week of August start was out by Memorial Day. Would not want to start school next week. But, I have always hated having my kids in school until mid June, when it’s nice outside after a long winter and everyone wants a break. Now that my kids are older, once APs are done, no one has much motivation. It also aligned the Hs and college calendars more closely, which can be nice for families with older kids. So, it can actually be a nice schedule. I wouldn’t mind a switch.
