Every Passat repair is at least $1000 and after a few years some major thing seems to break. That said, they're fun to drive. What are your priorities for this car?

We just turned in a very low milage 2006 Passat that got great gas mileage and was a great car.; we just wanted something newer. I know someone still driving a 2002 Passat with just your basic maintenance issues of parts wearing after 20+ years.

Agreed, my Corollas were good to me in my 20s and early 30s. Cheap to maintain, fill up, and repair

Agree with the Toyota recommendation.

This is a bit dated - Honda and Acura reliability is not what it once was, though repair costs will be less than for a European car.

True re reliability but still far better than getting a vw

Also does this Passat require premium gas? That adds up. Our Passat was a real gas guzzler, too.

Depends, if it has a turbo engine, likely yes, in non-turbo then regular gas is likely.

I recently traded my 2016 passat in for a tiguan. I LOVED my passat - I got a great deal on it brand new, and didn't have any issues with it. It got great gas mileage - i'd say on par with other sedans. Some highway trips I was getting closer to 40mpg, but usually upper 30s. I used regular gas. I can't comment much on repair costs because I didn't need any repairs while I owned it. the previous poster that said make sure there is a VW garage nearby - i'd agree with that. It is good to have someone that specializes in VWs in case she does happen to need any repairs.

VWs in general are a great buy since they depreciate so quickly. If her college town has a VW garage (I don't mean dealership) she'll be good. It's inevitable that a car will need repair...it just helps if you can easily access a non-dealership shop.

DH got a 2016 Passat that year, he's got 115k on it now and has been so pleased with it.

Our DD in college needs a car and is looking at a 2016. Any thoughts or advice?
