We have a 2013 BMW but only about 60k miles on it. It's not terrible, but it's not great. We've had various problems that are outside of routine maintenance. We've had 2 BMWs with leaky sunroofs which were very expensive to repair. We will not get another one.

You fool. You don’t need to get new tires and batteries every year. Oil changes can be done at Jiffy lube once you get out of the free service mode. So your statement is pure exaggeration. Tired last 20-35 thousand miles. Maybe more depending on your driving.
American cars use the same tires brands. Dunlop. Continental and others.

I'm pretty sure the poster didn't say he was buying new tires every year....

My father owns a BMW (now six years old) and it's not cheap to maintain even though he takes great care of the car. My mother's Japanese car by comparison is pennies to the dollar in terms of maintenance costs. And it's older, and has twice the mileage....

I've learned from their experiences. BMWs look fun and are attractive but I don't care about cars enough to spend the money on them.

My husband had an older BMW when I met him. The breakdowns were big and the repair cost bigger. I remember the repair sales guy saying we had a winner meaning it is payday for them.

My BNWs always last long. I’ve had four since 1996. All traded in at around 110k miles, except the inline six diesel, which a family member has and now has 197k miles.

I’ve always stuck to the inline six engine except my latest is a 2017 X3 with the four cylinder and has 31k miles and has never had anything but the free routine maintenance. I think the four cylinder may be the one to last forever! I never thought I’d leave the smooth as silk six cylinder.

There's a good reason why a high mileage off-warranty BMW is so cheap relative to it's original price.

Not only do they require a lot of work after a certain age, that work is also expensive.

BMWs are designed to drive hard/fun but not for longevity. Same with Audi/Benz (some).

iseecars did an analysis of the cars most likely to last to 200k miles. Unsurprisingly it was filled with toyota and honda models. 200k is a ridiculous hurdle to meet, though. They also did a ranking of sports cars lasting to 150k miles. Audi TT had 4% making it to there (number 1 sports car). By comparison, BMW M5 was 4th on the list at 2%.

My guess is that only about 5% of BMWs make it to 100k. I don't have any data to support it. I rarely see a mercedes, audi, or BMW that is more than 10 years old. Personally, for me, I dump my Audis after the 4 year full warranty period is up. My neighbor had a 2015 BMW M4 and it had lots of problems after 3 years. Obviously, just anecdotes.

Anyone with recent (2013 and later) BMWs with mileage more than 100K. The reliability of BMWs have improved a bit recently but I don't see many high mileage cars that doesn't require a lot of work. Curious to know what others experience is.
