I use this on a 70 pound lab. But I got away with using human toenail clippers for the longest time, and much preferred those. But this one linked above has nice sharp blades. I just do the very tip of the nails once a week.

And I walk my dog several times daily on concrete. Not enough to keep claws short enough. I wish.


Oh, and the guillotine shaped ones might be better if your dog's nails are cracking.

I glued sand paper to a cutting board and trained the dogs to scratch at it for treats. It takes the edge off. I do take them to the groomer a couple times a year and nails get trimmed there, or any time there is a vet appointment I ask for it to be done.

What about them? Just leave them!

So they can catch and get ripped out? No thanks. Also against the advice of the vet.

I use a cordless Dremel (the cordless is not as loud as the corded one, although I end up replacing batteries every couple years). It’s not even the special one. Just a cheap Dremel.

Would you recommend a brand of dog toe nail clippers? The clippers I have are crushing the nail when clipping and causing cracks up the nail. I’m willing to try a nail grinder although my rescue dog is skittish around appliances and vacuums when in use. During the pandemic we are walkIng on soft trails instead of sidewalk, so our dogs’ nails are getting too long. In case it makes a difference in the recommendation, we have two 70-80 pound dogs.
