Love Case Western! I’m surprised to read that merit aid is stingy. Back in 2011 when my son (a computer science major) was applying, CW was known to give tons of aid, and they offered him nearly full tuition IIRC. He didn’t end up selecting Case, but it was his choice right after Cal (too expensive) and Maryland (where he went on a full ride). The computer science program has an excellent reputation.

How is their computer science program?

I've had good results with merit aid for Case, both for myself 27 years ago and DC last year.

A family member graduated less than 10 years ago and the acceptance rate when they applied was 70%. They went because they didn't get into their state flagship. They had a great experience and became a successful, happy, & well adjusted Physical Therapist. Times have changed, it has gotten much more difficult to get into- not sure they would get in today.

One of my best friends from high school went to Case and I visited a few times. My friend was an electrical engineering major and all of his friends were engineering/computer science, as were most people in his dorm. The place had a really different vibe, kind of geekily cool before Big Bang Theory was a thing.

I agree with one of the PPs about the snow. I once visited for a week because my own school's break didn't exactly align with Case's, and there was a huge blizzard. It was so pretty.

Also, I liked Cleveland.

I don't know much about it but the senior that I know with the really, really superlative grades, scores, and service is going there so I suspect it's a pretty good school!

I went there in the late 90s. I met a lot of great friends and had an overall good experience. Life definitely centers around science, engineering and medicine.
Winters are long but there is a lot of snow which I enjoyed.. If it's going to be cold, at least it should be snowy is my take. Life doesn't stop for snow like it does here in the DMV.

In general, don’t expect merit aid from “name” schools.

Has a lot of really strong programs and has become quite selective. Vibe is nerdy but not competitive amongst the students, more collaborative or independent. The area is a bit of a mixed bag. Campus is ok but nothing too great to look at (don’t expect brick-lined streets and historic buildings) - surrounding neighborhoods vary wildly, from very nice and $$$ to “don’t stop at the stop lights.” A kid who grew up in this area may have a hard time adjusting to the weather. You wouldn’t think it’s too different from here but it really is, and winter can be quite long and depressing.

Depends on the field. In other words, not everyone's heard of it, but those who matter certainly know about it. It's pretty highly regarded.

Solid school. Also, Cleveland had some successful urban revival and it's a city worth exploring.

An undervalued school with some strong programs. The medical school is its crown jewel and kind of gives the place its overall bearings. Many improvements to the campus in recent years and parts of the surrounding area house beautiful parks and museums. But for an east coaster, there will be culture shock. Or you’ll fall in love with nearby suburbs like Shaker Heights and never want to leave. Name recognition is not great.

I think it is in Cleveland. Brrr.
