No- kids do not share bats and helmets (or any other equipment). Dugouts are not being used. Bags are lined up 6ft apart along the fence and the batting team stands by their respective bags. No high fives or anything like that. I’m totally comfortable with it- nothing is “no risk”- but this is very low risk IMO. They are outdoors and softball is naturally a socially distanced sport.

We are in the softball world - no one is sharing bats and helmets. No high fives or hand shakes. No inside team dinners or family style dinners. Balls are wiped down frequently. Everyone wears masks going to/from the field. Bags are spread out along the fence. Girls and parents do not sit close to one another (in the dugout, stands, etc).

Of course there is some risk, but it is certainly not a "clueless" situation.

Also - areas with very low and declining transmission rates are much safer then areas with spiking transmission rates.

this virus looks to be here for a long time so a balance of some sort, must be sought.

No physical activity or sports for years and the extreme negative consequences of that must be balanced with trying to find some safe sports option for kids and all people.

If the football, soccer and basketball players have to switch to cross county, singles tennis, golf and winter track outdoors for a few years - that stinks but is is better then nothing.

Some activities are deemed much safer then others so it stands to reason that not all sports activities are created equal.

Outside is safer then inside - much safer.

Distanced is safer then close.

Safest outdoor team sports for girls during covid (team sport, no tennis or golf please). My girls are late ES and MS and play lacrosse but I'm not sure it's going to happen in the age of covid. We didn't want to pay travel club fees only to lose them and have the kids not play. We're not a rich family. We're working class. This past spring was so hard on our very active kids who usually spend the year playing lacrosse, running 5Ks, playing basketball, and taekwondo. Taekwondo has gone virtual (and is not a team sport). Just thinking ahead, if lacrosse rec leagues do not happen, what are alternative safe outdoor team sports?

I say safe in terms of "can physically distance" and because VHSL labeled lacrosse high risk and threatened that at the HS level it may not even be played. So when I say "safe" I am referring to can this sport be played with physical distance and how has VHSL labeed the sport because I would imagine even for non-HS players, VHSL's ranking would effect whether that sport can be played in covid times or not.
