Great non-fiction books for that age are (auto)biographies:

Up from Slavery: an Autobiography - by Booker T. Washington
I Have Lived a Thousand Years - by Livia Bitton-Jackson
Through My Eyes - by Ruby Bridges
Black Boy - by Richard Wright
The Story of My Life - by Helen Keller
Coming of Age in Mississippi - by Anne Moody
Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy - by Seymour Reit
