I have an infant and I am actually having the opposite worry at least in terms of continuity of care. If your nanny gets sick, or quits, I feel like it's going to be so hard to find someone else. But then I'm not feeling comfortable with daycare either.

Same worry here- everyone is looking for a nanny right now. If you find one but it doesn’t work out, it just seems dicey for finding another.

No. I pay $1K/week at a downtown center we love for three kids for ~45 hrs care. No way we could get a decent nanny for that.

How is that rate possible at a legitimate center unless it's subsidized?

How do you only pay 1k a week for three kids? Is this subsidized, e.g., a federal center where you are an employee? It would be 1800-2000 a week for 3 kids where we are.

We were going to send our 4 month old to daycare starting at 6 months, but are keeping our nanny on longer. Maybe till she is 1. Not sure yet.

We are sending out 2.5 year old back to daycare. She misses other children and benefits from the structure at school.

I am a daycare parent. Kids have always been in daycare and are currently in daycare (they only left for one month due to covid). We can afford a nanny and though about it but chose not to do so. We both work from home (due to covid) and it would be too much having the kids home. Playgroups aren’t even open to get them out the house and the playground equipment is very hot by us. I rather they continue to socialize and learn at a daycare then be at home with chaos.

You can definitely get a decent nanny for less than $50k/year.

Do you have enough room in your house to have the kids there with a nanny and also effectively get work done? If yes I would go with the nanny.

Mine are a bit older and are in daycare again (and are loving it), but I'm filled with dread thinking about what we will do if they have to shut down again. Since socialization and money aren't deciding factors for you right now, I think the nanny option will be far less stressful for you if you have the space to do it.

Nanny for a kid under two if I could afford it, no question.

For a toddler or preschool aged kid it's a harder choice. I love the daycare environment for my son and a nanny can't give him that. But this virus is not a joke and I worry about the risk, not to mention we can see our immune-compromised grandparents at all while he's in daycare. We don't really have the money for a nanny though so we didn't have to make the choice.

Nanny if you can afford it.

We have had a summer nanny and are trying to decide what to do this fall for our toddler and infant. If we only had one kid, or both kids were older, we would do daycare for cost savings and socialization. But given the times, would you prefer a nanny if you could? Why? Our nanny had other plans for the fall that have now changed and we could keep her on until next fall. We think she is very good (but better with the baby). Our daycare was also good (but not great). This is not a discussion about which is better in regular times and the cost difference is manageable. I'm interested to hear from people who have kids currently enrolled in daycare.
