I think there are definitely parents who would want this, but you need to be careful. I think legally you would actually have to become a tutoring center or daycare. You have to be able to run a business out of your home. Daycares have some benefits in that they can sometimes get credits, grants, and home business laws are different for them. A small business accountant would be able to set up a lot of this.

No matter how much you trust the people you're talking about, anything involving kids turns INSANE very fast.

OP here - I thought I was providing something that parents needed during the pandemic. If parents have to go back to work and their kids are only in school for 2 days a week I could watch them the other days and provide augmentation to their class work. There already is an option for kids to have DL every day. I’m not sure how what I’m proposing is indecent or inconsiderate. Please explain.


I agree OP. DL tutoring is not useful for me or my kids. That said, I wouldn't be comfortable sending my kids to a strangers house. I would be comfortable on my porch or in my back yard with my kids, you, and a few other kids who we know.


OP here - I understand your position. It’s too hot now for outside. I believe I will already know the parents who sign up. They probable will know me through my kids, from the neighborhood, or from my previous job. I’m in Fairfax.

OP here - I thought I was providing something that parents needed during the pandemic. I would get insurance, but I didn’t think about sexual abuse insurance. I would not be alone with any of the kids. Also, I’m a 52yo woman.

You’re opening yourself up to a lot of liability by doing this in your home with minors.

I would help with whatever they are learning for their 2 days in class. In addition, could offer extra subjects if they want or have time like intro to coding, object oriented design, PKI, chemistry, physics, gardening, cooking etc. I also have a lot outside - basketball, large open grassy area for soccer, King Kong playset, and a pool.

What do think about helping to teach/tutor kids at home? I am a retired engineer/project manager with experience in chemistry, coding, and math. My youngest starts college in the fall. I am thinking of offering a few days of teaching in my home to 8yo and older for any subjects they want. I have a large home and could socially distance up to 8 kids. Do you think parents would pay for this? How much do you think would be reasonable?
