You're not fat, you're flabby. Keep doing the weights and work up to heavier as you can. There's a couple on YouTube who do some good into weight lifting videos for toning. Search for HasFit and look their 15 minute beginner arm exercises, and their 15 minute standing abs.

OP just lacks muscle tone, sounds like. She's not fit, regardless of how much fat she's got on her.

there is "skinny fat' which is not overweight but overfat (high body fat percentage). The best way to figure this out is to get your body fat percentage professionally tested.

There is also just "lacking muscle" which may be a decent body fat for your height but you dont have strength.


I just started a training/health program and this is what my trainer is suggesting. I am at a relatively healthy weight for my height and dont need to lose a lot of pounds (maybe 5-7), but I am at 30% body fat and at my age, ideal is somewhere around 25%. I am adding more protein, and doing more intense cardio and lifting while keeping calories the same, creating a caloric deficit via exercise and muscle building--over time, I should lose fat and put on muscle. It's not quick weight loss, but what I need (and what you are looking for?) is more of a body recomposition. A lot of my exercises, so far, are body weight or light weight (squats, lunges, overhead press, ab work, blanks, etc). I am guessing you can find good workouts online.

Burpees sounds vigorous. But can be fun and challenging.
You should be aching and sore if you do squats and lunges the right way. I mean your legs will be sore when you are trying to lower yourself to sit. So if 10 squats don't make you sore, do 20x, 30x.

I've been doing a kickboxing program online and the membership is $10 a month. They have library of cardio and weight training videos and it has been really great. I'm toning up pretty quickly because I am having fun doing it, so I've been much more consistent with it than with other programs.

Yes, do bodyweight exercises. They are quite good.

Pushups
Squats
Lunges
Tricept Dips
Planks

Burpees are hell, I'd personally skip them, but you shouldn't

Body weight movements to start: can you do 20 push ups ? 2 min planks ? Series of 50 squats and lunges? 20 explosive burpees with good Form

Once you have integrated Every day 25 min of circuit training with the type of exercise Above (rotating focus on upper/lower body and core). And if you are still not gaining muscles/making progress (I would be Very surprised if you start from low). Then you can start worrying about lifting more and buying equipment

I think I am skinny fat. What’s the best way to build more muscle? I have a rowing machine, but need to avoid vigorous or strenuous exercise and inversions due to acid reflux.

I have been doing some dumbbell exercises with 3 and 5lb weights. This is what makes me think I am skinny fat, I didn’t realize how hard some of the exercises were even with such light weights!
