Horacio Maslera at Plus Electric. He redid everything in our 1940's home and it was great! Honest, professional, sold work at a fair price.

OP here. That's our understanding after several evaluations. It has to do with the type of system that is existing - its not dangerous.

2:22pm - I didn't mean to make it sound like a small job. What I meant was that we don't need to rewire the house. $10k sounds closer to what we are looking for. Do you have a recommendation?

How do you know you don’t need to rewrite the house?

Where are you located? Professional Electric in Alexandria redid the wiring and fixed some things our GC has done incorrectly in our NW dc house. They were well priced and did a great job

I would, but in the end I would not recommend them due to non-electrical issues -- the guy left a lot of trash laying around after the heavy up and other work. I was constantly finding random wires and metal parts in the grass and driveway (and we have small children). He also brought his dog w/ him one morning when he was meeting the inspector -- dog was supposed to stay in truck but he hopped out killed a rabbit and just left it in the driveway. He apologized later and said he didn't notice. But as I mentioned we got several other quotes around that price. Shop around and know that the master electricians you get the quotes from end up sending their journeymen to do the work anyway, so sometimes you can't anticipate some of these issues. And if you want total professionalism the price gonna be a lot higher.

Wilcox in Hyattsville has done good work for me. Not cheap but easy to deal with and I think honest.

i'm the 11:15 poster. we bought a 1960s colonial that had the original fuse box and wiring, no three-prong plugs in whole house except in kitchen.
We did a heavy up to 200 amps (with the proper permit), replaced all the outlets throughout, added 4-prong outlets in laundry area, added two new outlets in garage workshop.
We did not replace light fixtures.
It was $2500. We got several quotes around that price and a few that were a couple thousand higher.

You make it sound so easy! We bought a 1940s house with original electrical system. Increasing the amps to the house is called heavy up. It requires a permit and a licenses electrician. We did that plus replaced all of the 2-prong outlets with grounded ones and changed out a bunch of light fixtures. It cost over $10k.

We lived in a 1930s apartment building in NW DC, and the go to was Holt Electrical. Maybe Maurice was the most senior person's name, wish I could remember. I believe they are a DC-based, family type business that our building used for everything and recommended to all the owners. I thought they were professional and very responsive.

I did this last summer. It was about $2500. Got quotes from several electricians, they did range quite a bit and we went with one of the cheapest ones.

DH and I have recently purchased a 1930s colonial (see window thread). We have had a few general contractors come by, but we feel like their recommendations seem a bit off or too extensive based on our understanding of what is existing.

We would like to work with someone who has an understanding of old homes and the safety of the existing electrical that can help with some updates (grounding the house, changing outlets, and increasing amperage). Any recommendations would be so appreciated!
