I’m in Petworth and know preschool/early elementary girls with most of these - Ruby, Ruth, Cora, Matilda (Tilda), Elsie, Harriet. Nobody would think twice about any of these in a DC classroom. Are you nickname people? Some of these lend themselves to nicknames and could be hard to avoid. If you want the full name, Ruby, Martha, and Elsie are good choices.

Love Samantha, like the rest except Harriet.

I like Samantha, Ruth, and Cora. Not a fan of the nickname Coco. Don't like Cicely or Cecilia because I've never met a nice one.

The rest have bad connotations for me from the generation born in the 40s and 50s.

I like Cora (no nn), Cecily, and Harriett. Ruth can work with the right last name.

Ruby and Elsie are not good names for people anymore. I know Ruby was popular a few generations ago -- I have a Pearl and a Goldie in my family tree -- but there are lots of dogs named Ruby now. It might be an ok middle name.

I love Hattie for Harriet but am not crazy about the formal name. I’m pregnant with my second boy but if it has been a girl I was going to use Matilda without a doubt. I love Tilly.

They’re all fine-except Elsie. Elsie is a cow’s name.

They’re very hipster though.

I love Harriet and Cecilia. Ruth is a great middle name, but I don't like it for a first name.

Ruby strikes me as a stripper name. Elsie and Cora seem trendy and don't pass my supreme court justice test. Matilda is a Roald Dahl book and musical. Martha seems very plain. Samantha seems very 90s to me.

I like your names, even the old lady ones! Ruth is tough, but I think it would work for the right girl.

I LOVE Harriet and I think it will make a comeback soon. It sounds beautiful to me. Hattie is an adorable nickname.

Ruby - old lady
Samantha - bitchy 80’s girl, plus it feels like a man’s name dressed up as a woman’s name
Ruth - old lady
Cora- nn Coco - old lady with stripper nickname
Cicely or Cecilia - nice but I have a friend who spells it Cecily
Matilda - waltzing old lady
Martha - insufferable old lady
Elsie - hmm. Okay.
Harriet - mean lady on Little House but otherwise just old lady

What’s up with why you like all old lady names? And why leave out Gertrude and shortened?

How about naming her after an actual old lady in your lives who you love and would like to honor?
