Only for the people setting them off. There was a group of idiots setting them off in our alley last night around 2am, mere feet from our bedroom window and I woke up to what sounded like a bomb going off in my backyard. It's not about being a wuss, it's about expecting just the smallest amount of respect and consideration from my neighbors.

I agree that it's totally insane that you can buy them legally just about everyplace.

Back before they used to have security checkpoints at the mall fireworks, I almost got hit in the face with a really big firework. Drunk idiots were setting them off in the middle of the crowd, and weren't smart enough to set the trajectory right. The Park Police kept riding around on their horses trying to get to people after they saw the flare, but of course by then the drunks had moved on to another location.
They're not even made in the US anymore, so we can go ahead and ban them without worrying about the impact on American jobs.

Fireworks are legal because they’re fun, and reasonably safe when used by a responsible person. The idea that some governmental agency has to keep everyone in a bubble of safety, regardless what the individual wants, is pathetic.
