Speaking as though school were a normal setting and COVID was not an issue... Every elementary school has before and after care, so transportation should not be an issue. Needing care and being able to afford it are issues that most families deal with, so not a unique hardship that would be considered for a COSA. Honestly, this is something you should have considered before you purchased the house, if it was that important to you. You could also look at private.

They are renting for a year if you read the thread.

I'm sure the school is fine, but if you are that worried, then it would be easier to change your home rather than switch schools.

Op here: I read them on several different sites. Mostly an issue with bullying, the school being largely ESL Learners, among other things. I realize schools will be distance for some time but I am trying to figure out how to navigate this. We are moving from San Diego, have to rent for a year (very slim
Pickings in the rental market) so we would have to switch him to a new school in a year anyway, considering we aren’t going to buy where we are renting. We know nothing about the area, and the move is already stressful enough.

Its very difficult and you'd need a good reason. Pick a house with a school you like or go private. Simple.

Which school are you zoned for, and how did you obtain the information that led to your opinion? There are people here from pretty much every MCPS who can give you actual feedback.

Did you read those things on DCUM?

It’s easier to move, OP.
That’s what we did. We lived in Silver Spring and moved to Bethesda.

Only if you win the lottery for an immersion program or get into a magnet/other special program.

Not for the reasons you gave or anything like it.

Through legal means, no.

If you bought a house anywhere inside the beltway (East or west) or in Churchill, Wootton, or WJ, your elementary school is probably totally fine no matter the great schools.

It’s doubtful kids will be in classrooms in the fall. Distance learning will likely continue.

If your only intel is from web research, you should relax.

Search this forum for COSA (change of school assignment). Generally, the answer is no. But many on DCUM would have you believe that cheating is relatively easy and rampant. You have to have a real hardship that is unusual, and not a typical issue that most families deal with.
