There was another post on this as well and parents replied that they thought it "didn't make sense" that schools would have huge budget cuts next year. Unfortunate, because the kids are going to be returning to a really bare bones experience next year. We just can't keep doing more with less.

It depends on where you are. DC is getting an increase; just not as high as what was planned.

They’ve told us to expect a 3-4% cut at every level. No after school programs, no money for supplies, possibility of furloughs and layoffs. Not sure how we will implement all these incredibly expensive measures to control the spread of the virus. Leadership told us that without a federal stimulus for schools that we will be fully remote next year because opening would be too costly with mitigation in place.

my friend was hoping to recoup the step salary increase next year.

How on earth would that be possible? State and local budgets are going to have gargantuan holes given the loss of tax revenue. NY is looking at laying off 22,000 workers.
