LOL

I actually had a friend many years ago that was planning to divorce her husband. I had just given her my lawyers name. Her husband was at the doctor's office for a hemorrhoid problem...or so they thought. Turned out he has advanced stage colon cancer. He was gone in 7 mo. I can't say she was broken up about it.

+1. This is the kind of crap my x would pull - trying to find the exact right words to get me to shut up. The next day, it was right back to the same BS.

"What happened between us?"

If my partner had a solid, thought, realistic perspective on how and why things went wrong between us, AND took an appropriate amount of responsibility for their role (and that means NEITHER blowing it off, nor being a martyr/over-reacting in that passive aggressive way) , and started coming up with ways we could correct the problems with a realistic plan for moving forward in a way that ensures it wouldn't happen again -- sure. Maybe.

Depends on if things went so far that I'd burned out all my caring receptors by struggling too long to fix things without any buy-in from my partner. That's what happened for me -- it was all "I can't change, the problem is with you" until I made the call to divorce, and then it was all "don't leave! I can change!" At that point, for that relationship, nothing he might say would have been enough, because it just was no longer on the table. But up to that point, for me? Sure.

They would have to actually mean what they say. Not easy for a narcissist.

Something that would make you realize this was the right person and the relationship was worth fighting for.
