I don't assume anything.
-According to DCPS data, Shepherd and Eaton have a similar percentage of students exceeding expectations in both Math and ELA.

-Eaton has more students meeting expectations than Shepherd in Math and ELA (E: 56% & 54% vs S: 39% & 44%) because it has significantly less students who are NOT meeting expectations.

-Eaton lists a far more robust set of offerings for programs compared to Shepherd.

-Eaton is clear with a statement (albeit short) on the school's values regarding inclusion and diversity.

-Eaton reports more than double the minutes per week children spend outdoors.

Of course, it's been hard to ascertain either school's culture amid COVID quarantine. So, some of this is gleaned through reading, talking, and through their websites. Oh, one more:
-Eaton's website is superior and way more transparent than Shepherd's.

Both do well on test scores but I would not call Shepherd particularly progressive on certain issues--gender roles, outdoor time in marginal weather, junk food as rewards, non-Christian religions, same-sex families, etc. I can't comment on how Eaton compares.

I'd go with Shepard. Good Admin team and IB for Deal.

This. Also, I know it's probably a small sample size and there may be year by year fluctuations, but white kids seem to be doing really well at Shepherd.

How do other DCPS schools compare to Shepherd on this metric, for both black and white kids?

If I were in your boat, I’d choose Shepherd. It’s a very solid school. Smaller by 100 kids (even having PK3). Hearing fantastic things of the new principal. It’s IB model is a plus. Also, it feeds to Deal which is a stronger school than Hardy. Yes, it will be even in 3 years. No knock to Hardy, I’d happily send my kid there. Either way, you’re in a great position.

Deal might not be better performing than Hardy by the time 2nd grader makes it to middle school. Eaton and Hardy all the way.

2nd grade. great lottery positions for both.

What grade? Did you get into both via lottery or are you IB for one and did lottery for other? I’m only asking because if you’re in an older grade, it may change answer.

Both good schools and diverse schools. But Shepherd scores higher. One feeds to Deal; one feeds to Hardy. It's hard to tell about the schools culture and faculty, since the quarantine, it's been impossible to visit and to meet the staff. I know there is consternation about feeder patterns into Wilson, but not concerned about that as much. Ultimately, looking for a progressive school that will challenge my kid.
