That's how I'm feeling.

Haha no. My parents always said stuff like "we could pay for a car...or we could put that money toward your college tuition..." I got the message.

I did "buy" a 12 year old car in good shape fat a steep discount from a relative who was upgrading when I was 23 and settling down a bit, but still making peanuts. My parents hooked me up with that deal, and i think paid the relative the difference. Lasted 5 years before the engine died and the cost of repairing was greater than the value. So that's an option if you would like to help later on when she knows where she'll be living.

My kids needed a car more in high school than college or post college. I would get or help her get a car when she graduates ONLY if it is helpful depending on where she lands. If she is moving to NYC after graduation, she won't need or want one.

Don't base it on a age or life milestone, base it on need.

We were restricted to an ancient beat up vehicle with manual transmission. DH's sister got her mom's used car when her mom bought a new one. DH had to buy his own with his summer garbageman money. They were from a relatively wealthy family. Why would you feel bad?

Yes in our neighborhood a lot of the kids got Jeeps and then had to leave them at home when they went to college.

Get yourself a new car and give your kid your old one.

Wtf?

No.

And she does t need a car when she graduates either. You’re saddling her with costs of car repairs and insurance and parking. What if she lives in DC or NYC etc? A car is unnecessary there.

We bought a car when oldest DD turned 17. Middle DD went to boarding school so she didn't need it. We made clear that the car was not oldest DD's personally but the "kid's car." So it stayed for my youngest when oldest DD went off to college. Don't know who it's going to go to when he graduates though ...

No. I have one neighbor who got a car after he turned 16 because both his parents need theirs and he goes to a school that’s about 10 miles away. Other neighbors helped their college graduate buy a car. Until then she borrowed a family car as needed, and didn’t need one at school.

We will play it by ear since ds won’t need a car to get to and from school. Likely scenario is he gets one of ours as a hand me down when he goes off to college, and we get a new car.

This doesn’t seem like a rite of passage tied to a specific age to me. It’s more about what the family needs to function.

No way. DCs will get a car when they can afford to buy/ upkeep themselves. They can use ours in the meantime.

No. Dual teacher household. Older kids bought their own first cars as young adults. Younger two will share use of a family car when they are under 18.

Seems like most of my DD's friends got cars at 16. For whatever reason, we didn't and now she's turning 20 with no car. I feel so bad. The plan was for her to get a car once she graduates college since her school is in a historic district that isn't particularly car friendly. What should we get her? What do people typically spend?
