My first question would be why not do both? I'm assuming scheduling conflict.

If she knows what school(s) she wants to go to and especially if she got an invite, I'd go to the ID camp. Yeah she may get some shit from her team/coach, but whatever life is about to change.

And even if the coach or assistant has asked you to come, it doesn't mean they're interested in offering you money. Know stories of camps where kids were asked to attend and never got connected with the coach in-person or that the coach didn't know the player because the assistant invited because much of his pay is through camp. Attend camps where your child wants to attend regardless of soccer. Then you'll benefit from the process.

Lots of girls on our team skipped games for ID camps. Especially if it's the school you are interested in or one that has reached out to your junior. Also, now that your kid can communicate with coaches - why not just ask the coach??

The whole point of going to a tournament like Jefferson Cup is for the recruitment aspects. If a particulr kid can do better going somewhere else that weekend -- then go somewhere else that weekend. Another player on the team can take up the playing time. Win win.

Now do be smart about ID camps. They are largely a money grab, but can serve a purpose. Is it a school that the kid really has an interest in? The kid should already be in communication with the coach. And -- the kid should really be working out now -- alot.

My daughter -- now 2 years out of college will tell kids all the time that she wished she worked harder in the summers to get better. She was very fast and that got her lots of attention from recruiting, but she did not really start working hard to get ready for the season until the summer before her Junior year at college, and that was after a Sophomore season where she only played in about half the team's games.

If your kid really wants to impress they need to be in great condition. Can they run a 3200 in under 12 minutes? Can they run a 100m in under 13.5 seconds? Can they do the beep test to at least level 11 but better for 12? Can they juggle with both feet? Can they juggle for at least 100 touches? Can they dribble well with both feet? Can they trap well with both feet? Can they shoot or clear a ball while on the move with both feet? All of those are things to work on in the summer. Upper body strength should not be forgotten either, but can be done at home with lighter weights.

Do the right thing for your daughter. ID camp with exclusive access to that coach or a mediocre showcase. Have you talked to her club coach about the situation yet?

I would debate that last one in light of the unique circumstances this year. There are limited opportunities for id camps, and they have more leverage than normal.
