I had a tall 10 year old and a petite 11 year old.

When did people move kids from high back booster / 5 point harness to low booster? DD is 6 and tall but still in her high back booster with 5 point harness. I am not sure it is actually safer but I feel better doing it. (Although watching kids climb in and buckle and parent drives off in .5 seconds looks nice too).

About a month before his 8th birthday. We would have waited until his birthday but we lost it. My kid is tall for his age.

My 7 year old is in a no back booster. He is very tall for his age.

A basic booster is just a glorified phone book and will last for years, and is easy to switch between cars.

My almost 10 year old is still in the booster. She's on the short side, so most of her friends are already out of the booster. We just go by the measurements on line (cited earlier). I also think she finds it more comfortable, since she's used to it and can see out easier.

Once they're 8, it depends on size, not age. As a PP said, google the five piont test for a good reference.

DS is really tiny, and he was in a booster until 10.5
DD is 8 and still uses a booster, but won't for much longer.

In part it depends on the car. In my Escape, my DS moved out of the booster at 8 (he's 75% for height). In my sister's Expedition, her DS moved out of the booster at 10 (he's 50% for height).

My DD is much shorter than her older brother and is nowhere near being out of the booster at 7.5. Maybe at 9 or 10 she will be big enough.

If the state allows it and if the seat belt fits properly, then use the seat belt sans booster.

I have a 9.5 year old average sized boy. I still make him sit in the no back booster. Almost none of his friends are in boosters anymore as about age8.

The seatbelt has to fit properly. Google car seat lady and there is the 5 step test to see. We just moved my 10 1/2 year old out and he's almost there but not fully (but not really in the car much due to covid).

my 9 year old is big for her age and feels cramped in her booster. wondering if it's safe to let her be in the regular car seat.
