Hate to break the news but in Europe they use the pay to play model for 80% of the kids. The elite 20% that are identified and placed in academies are free paid for by the club. The other 80% that play the game but don't have the pro potential Pay to play Just like the herds of kids here. The difference is here soccer is a 2nd or 3rd tier sport. In Europe it is the top sport by far. The player pool is so much bigger than here.

who exactly is going to cover, at a minimum, coach's salaries and facilities rentals? There is no Barcelona to underwrite La Masia here.

In Europe youth coaches do not get paid more than a few hundreds. Their teams and nations dominate.

Here you all get robbed and then end up eating Sh¡t.

But of course, “we Americans are better”.

In Europe those kids are associated with academies that cost their parent clubs far more than any American youth teams

Even if parents arent paying dont the clubs then own your rights to the transfer market? I am assuming they recruit players early to then make a profit off them to sell to other teams or if really good to play for the home club. I am sure there are offsetting costs for players that dont make it or get injured but ultimately they are attempting to make a profit off the players right? I guess thats better for the families? America just doesn't have a huge soccer market to buy/sell/trade players, Europe has the market with leagues in each country. at least thats my take as an average american parent

All sports here are pay-to-play. And actually soccer is cheaper than some of the others.

And most MLS programs are free, juts DC United is an exception.

Just need names. No paragraphs or emotional rants.

Pretty please!

Not sure you are aware but soccer is a also a business in America. Why would they offer their services for free? What business offers their services for free???

My suggestion for you...go Rec and pay 100 bucks for the season! You'll get $60 back if the season doesn't start. Still too much?

Has it always been a business? If so, is there a way to eliminate the pay-to-play system?

I think most are requiring a deposit. If they don't play then you don't pay the rest until they start.
