We've only had girl dogs and both were sweet, but bossy, though incredibly easy to house train. We are thinking of getting a second dog now, and are leaning toward a male.

This made me laugh since our female dog lifts her leg to pee everywhere on our daily walks. She had two male litter mates, but was 9 weeks when she left and they weren't yet lifting their own legs. Also, not around the adult dogs. So ours has never had any interaction with male dogs to teach her this behavior. The only thing we can think is that while on the walks (we live in urban area) she noticed other dogs lifting legs. That, or the smell of pee on upright things like fire hydrants causing her to want to mark that. Ha!

I have heard whatever the primary caretaker's sex, get a dog of the opposite gender. It had worked out for me and my family so far. I grew up in a household of 5 brothers and my dad plus my mom, our dog and I were females. But now I have a boy dog

Males mark territory, so they pee more often and a little more in the house.

Wow the sexism is strong here. Male dog pee also ruins grass! We have a sweet very easy girl, op so dont know where you got the idea that girl dogs are not easy going! Maybe it is breed you get?

Sheesh, even as females are treated as inferior! Personally I hate when cursed (male dogs) lick their balls so I will take a female dog any day.

Good luck with your dog.

???

No, there’s something in the bitch’s hormones that burns grass. This is a real thing.

What sexism? “Bitch” is literally the proper word for female dog. It’s literally the definition of “bitch.”

I had both and strongly prefer a female dog. Much easier to potty train and, if you have small kids, she helps significantly with the children decreasing the probability to get asthma. Much smarter too.

Due to luck of the draw rather than intent, we’ve only ever had female dogs. My general sense is that males have a reputation for being easier, but wondering if those who have experience with both have noticed differences in temperament?

We’re about to get our first male, so I’m curious. He’ll be neutered, for what that’s worth.
